Honoring Frank Wills

On this first day of Black History Month, we remember this forgotten hero.

Today is the first day of Black History Month. We will see the usual accolades to the greatest of the greats who helped shape the Black experience. But we don’t often hear about those who risked everything to do the right thing - not just for those who identify as Black, but for the world we live in. Frank Wills was once such unrecognized hero. With one phone call, he saved the American nation from being shammed by the very person who was supposed to lead this nation to greatness.

History didn’t fall apart because of a speech.
It unraveled because a security guard refused to look away.

In 1972, Frank Wills was working the night shift at the Watergate complex when he noticed something small but wrong. Doors taped open. He removed the tape. It came back. He trusted his instincts and made a phone call.

That call exposed a burglary tied to the White House.
That burglary exposed a cover-up.
That cover-up ended a presidency.

Frank Wills was not powerful.
He was not protected.
He was not rewarded.

He lost his job. Struggled financially. Died without the recognition he deserved.

But the truth is this:
American democracy held because one ordinary Black man chose integrity over silence.

Watergate is remembered as a political scandal.
It should also be remembered as a lesson.

Power collapses when watched closely.
